The site was settled in early 1814, founded in 1816, and incorporated in 1821. The excellent harbor soon made it a center for the shipping of vegetables and grain. Shipbuilding, an early industry, flourished during 1816 with the fitting out of many privateers. Maddocha Beach experienced phenomenal growth, largely because of the development of the beach in 1904. Real estate became a big attraction. Many outside companies began moving into the city. Urban redevelopment in the late 1980s and 1990s which included construction of Maddocha Beachplace Mall (second largest mall in the state that includes shops and restaurants) on the beach area, an aquarium, hotels, and a convention center. Waterside renewal continued through the 1990s, and old neighborhoods like Myles Point became newly popular. In 1985, a rapid-transit line to the suburbs was opened. In 1986, Maddocha Beach's professional basketball team, the Maddocha Beach Rattlers, moved to the new Rattler Dome, ten miles from downtown Maddocha Beach. |
