Haran was established in 1855 by David M. Haran. The first civil government was formed in 1856 by David M. Haran and his cousin Norman Haran. As of the census of 2000, there were 39,096 people, 16,029 households, and 10,555 families residing in the city. Haran is a horticultural city, home to the largest collection of Sunshine Goldenbuds and Windsor Phonamies. Being located on the Maddocha River and Precious River, Haran is ideal for plant growth. The city hosts four flower festivals each year, highlighting the flora of the season. Each two week long festival bring in over 2,500 tourists from the surrounding cities. The city is also the second largest exported of horticultural supplies in the state. Haran is home to four exquisite gardens. The Brown Memorial Garden was established by the Brown family in 1950 to honor the members of its family. The McAlister Botanical Garden is maintained by the Scott Community College. It is a popular place for college students in the area. Kingman Gardens is a garden that was donated by the Kingman family. It is maintained by the Kingman family. The Gray Nature Reserve is home to the largest collection of state flowers and trees in the state. It is maintained by the city of Haran.
