It has always been said that the spirit of Dorinda Dixon, Tom W. Dixon's daughter, protects the city of Dorinda. Travelers that journeyed on Dixon Street during the 1940s and 50s often reported hearing an angelic voice singing in the night.
One traveler reported this story…
I was traveling late on night on Dixon Street. I heard footsteps behind me. Moments later, two men jumped out of the dark and scared me. They had guns pointed at me. They were about to rob me, when all of a sudden; I heard this angelic voice singing. The thieves became frightened and took off running in separate directions. I left and went on to my destination. Later on that week as I traveled back through Dorinda, I decided to report the incident to the police.
I later found out that a few days after I had given the descriptions of the assailants to the police, they were apprehended.
It has been said that the thieves were overheard telling other inmates that they had seen a giant bear standing behind the man, as they were about to rob him.
Hundreds of other travelers have reported similar occurrences. In 1959, a monument was placed on Dixon Street to honor Dorinda Dixon, the protector of Dixon Street. Even today, if you listen closely, you can hear the angel sing on Dixon Street.
