About 1830, Father Joseph Jones, a French born Roman Catholic missionary and educator established schools for children in eastern Maddocha. A state wide public school system was established in 1872. In the late 1980s, Maddocha had 3,242 public elementary and secondary schools, with a combined annual enrollment of 1,102,280 elementary pupils and 537,770 secondary students. In addition, about 252,911 students were enrolled in private elementary and secondary schools. The first university in Maddocha, Dayton University, was founded in Hardaway in 1938. By the late 1990s, Maddocha had 214 institutions of higher education with a combined enrollment of about 1,030,347. |
